ELECTION: REGISTER TO VOTE BY OCT.6
Area voters have less than two months to prepare for the upcoming Nov.4 election. The deadline to register is Oct.6 at 5 p.m. for residents to be able to vote in the general election.  Voters in the Prince William County and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park will be deciding on several state races. Virginia's next governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general and four delegates will be up for grabsw on this ballot.  In the races for governor and attorney general, the deadline for Virginia reform Party Candidates to file has been extended until Sept. 20.  Some Prince William residents will also vote in a special election to fill the Dumfries District School Board slot.  Residents who wish to add a question to the ballot have until Sept 6, 60 days before the general election to get court approval.  Registered voters who wish to circulate a petition to get a question on the ballot must have that petition question certified by a court and shoud submit those petitions to the General Registrars Office by early August.  Petitions usually must have at least 10 percent of the registered voters in the county to get a question on the ballot.

WHO CAN VOTE
There is no waiting period to register in Virginia.  Residents must be U.S. citizens and be 18 years old on or before Nov. 4, 1997. Voters can register in person or pick up an application at the Department of Motor Vehicles and branches of the public library system and register by mail.

Sudley North Government
7987 Ashton Ave, Thursday 2 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Prince William County's has applied to the U.S. Department of Justice to have both the McCoart building and Sudley North taken off the in person registration list because of low participation in the past.  If approved, the change will take place Sept.15. For more information, contact the Office of the Registrar. Residents who register will receive a voter registration card in the mail. Voters can register anywhere in the state, but their voter card will list the precinct where they vote and will tell them their districts.
