ASH LAWN HIGHLAND
This stunning 535 acre estate was the home of President James
Monroe, Visitors to this early 19th century working plantation
enjoy a guided tour of the house, which features Monroe's
personal possessions. The Summer Musical Festival is held in
Boxwood Gardens on the estate, Off I-64, on James Monroe Parkway
(Route 795).
BELMONT, THE GARI MELCHERS ESTATE & MEMORIAL GALLERY
This 18th century estate and art gallery was owned by American
artist Gari Melchers (1860-1932). Visitors may enjoy guided tours
by trained museum guides. Sections of the main house date to the
1790s and the house is highlighted with furnishings owned by the
Melchers. Special exhibitions and lectures, community open houses
and publications featuring Melchers' work are also offered. A
Visitor Center in the former
carriage house features a museum shop and orientation video.
BUSH GARDENS WILLIAMSBURG
Voted "Most Beautiful Theme Park" by the National Amusement Park
Historical Association, Busch Gardens Williamsburg is a European
themed park with 17th century flair. To celebrate its official
theme park sponsorship of the 1996 Olympic Games, Busch Gardens
has added a fourth roller coaster, "Wild IZZY,"
named for IZZY, the Official character of the 1996 Olympic Games.
THE CAPITOL
Under the magnificent 287 foot high white dome, elected senators
and representatives meet to shape U.S. legislative policy. Two
free tours begin at Randolph Rogers superb 10 ton bronze doors on
the Capitol's eastside. The Historical Room Tour (about 30
minutes long) begins in the original section: it views the
Rotunda, Statuary Hall and ends in the Crypt. National Mall (East
End). Washington D.C.
CHANCELLORSVILLE BATTLEFIELD VISITORS CENTER
While the Battle of Chancellorsville was Robert E. Lee's greatest
victory, it was also where General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson
was mortally wounded. Special events and tours
are offered during the summer months. Fredericksburg/Spotsylvania
National Military Park. State Highway 3, west of Fredericksburg.
CHATHAM
This 18th century Georgian brick mansion was headquarters for
federal commanders during the Civil War. In addition, Chatham
served as a communications center and hospital. It was here, that
Clara Barton and Walt Whitman nursed the wounded. Today, it
serves as the headquarters of the Fredericksburg/ Spotsylvania
National Military Park, State Highway 218 off State Highway 3,
overlooking Fredricksburg.
THE CHRYSLER MUSEUM OF ART
This museum is touted as being one of the top 20 museums in the
country. The collection includes paintings, sculpture, decorative
arts, glass and a gallery of photography.
COLONIAL NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
Jamestown and Yorktown, two of the most important sites in early
American history, are located within this National Park. Explore
two centuries of history through visitor centers, short films,
museums, exhibits, restored 18th century homes and walking and
auto tours.
COLONIAL WILLIAMSBURG
This is the nation's largest and oldest outdoor living history
museum. The Historic Area comprises 173 acres with 88 original
18th century buildings and hundreds of structures that have been
reconstructed on their original foundations. Enjoy trade
demonstrations, social events, tours and presentations which
illustrate the daily activities of the men, women and children of
18th century Williamsburg.
ENDLESS CAVERNS
Since 1920 these natural formations have thrilled visitors. The
grounds include a gift shop, as well as picnic and camping
facilities. Educational tours are available.
FREDERICKSBURG BATTLEFIELD
This area was the site of a fierce Civil War battle. Today, it is
a drive through park, which includes General Robert E. Lee's
command post, Confederate trenches, interpretive signs and maps
and a picnic area. The Visitor Center
offers a slide program and a walking tour along Sunken Road. 1013

THE GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR MEMORIAL
Housed in the historic former City Hall building, this memorial
includes nine galleries that chronicle the General's life as well
as a film and gift shop.
HARPERS FERRY NATIONAL HISTORICAL PARK
From the famous raid by John Brown and his followers, to the
largest surrender of Federal troops during the Civil War, Harpers
Ferry has been the backdrop for a remarkable and unparalleled
historical drama. In 1906 it was also the site of the second
conference of the Niagara Movement, started by W.E.B. DuBois.
Start a visit at the Visitor Center located on U.S. Highway 340,
Harpers Ferry, WV.
JAMESTOWN SETTLEMENT
The adventure of America's first permanent English colony is
recaptured at Jamestown Settlement through extensive galleries, a
dramatic film and living history. Outdoors,visitors can board
replicas of the settlers' ships, explore a recreated Colonial
fort and discover the world of Pocahontas in a Powhatan Indian
village.
MONTICELLO
One of the most beautiful estates in Virginia, this historic home
was designed and built by Thomas Jefferson. Many of the
furnishings are original. Jefferson died at Monticello on July 4,
1826, and its buried in the family cemetery. State Highway 53,
three miles southeast of the Business Office.
MUSEUM OF AMERICAN FRONTIER CULTURE
This museum is a living history facility with authentic 17th,
18th, and 19th century working farms. Costumed interpreters
depict life in Germany, Northern Ireland and England before
immigration to the United States and in America after immigration
to the United States and in America after immigration. Exit 222
off I-81, at intersection with I-64, Staunton.
PARAMOUNT'S KINGS DOMINION
This 400 acrea amusement park features over 50 rides and 10 live
shows in eight different theme areas. Roller coasters and other
thrill rides include: The Days of Thunder Simulator, and the all
new Nickelodeon Splat City. Paramount's Kings Dominion also
offers facilities for tent and RV camping.
PORTSIDE
This area features a visitor center, a market-place, trolley
tours of Portsmouth's Olde Towne district, entertainment and
ferry transportation to Norfolk. Within walking distance there
are a number of Portsmouth attractions, including the Children's
Museum, the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame and the Naval Shipyard
Museum.
SCIENCE MUSEUM OF VIRGINIA/ETHYL UNIVERSE
PLANETARIUM & SPACE THEATER
Experience more than 250 entertaining hands on exhibits,
thrilling giant screen films and informative multimedia
planetarium shows in Virginia's only OMNIMAX theater.
SMITHSONIAN INSTITUTION
Centered on the National Mall in Washington D.C., the Smithsonian
Institution is the largest museum complex
in the world. Celebrating its 150th anniversary in 1996, the
Institution is devoted to public education and national service
in the arts, sciences and history. There are 14 Smithsonian
museums and the National Zoological Park in the nation's capital.
STATE CAPITOL
Thomas Jefferson designed the central portion of this Roman
Classical building the first public building of its kind in
America. The General Assembly of Virginia, the oldest law making
body in the Western Hemisphere, first met here in October 1788.
The Capitol houses the famous Houdon statue of George Washington.
VIRGINIA AVIATION MUSEUM
Journey through aviation history and view exhibits of vintage
flying machines, pioneer exhibits, World War II exhibits, Admiral
Richard E. Byrd and the Virginia Aviation Hall of Fame.
WATER COUNTRY USA
Water Country USA, the mid-Atlantic's largest water themed park,
features a wondrous collection of water rides, slides and
entertainment - all set to a 1950's and 60s surf theme. This
sensational water wonderland offers scores of attractions for
little visitors, including the park's newest and largest
interactive kids' area. "H2O UFO." This mysterious new "sci-fi"
attraction has invaded Water Country USA, featuring a wacky
combination of slides, spray jets and an amazing transformation
machine!
THE WATERSIDE FESTIVAL MARKETPLACE
The Waterside Festival Marketplace overlooks the harbor in the
midst of the city's revitalized downtown. The Waterside offers a
unique variety of restaurants, specialty retail and food shops,
and exciting entertainment centers which feature dancing, live
bands and billiards. The Waterside's international selection of
cuisine includes British, Italian, Chinese, Mexican and Greek
just to name a few.
WHITE HOUSE & WHITE HOUSE VISITOR CENTER
Visit the most famous address in America, and the oldest public
building in the District of Columbia. Reserved tickets for guided
tours of the house may be arranged through your Member of
Congress six months in advance; free 20 minute self guided tours
are also possible Tuesday through Saturday 10 A.M.-12 P.M.
(Tickets are required from March to September and can be obtained
at the nearby Visitor Center).
YORKTOWN VICTORY CENTER
The drama of the American Revolution from the beginnings of
Colonial unrest to the emergence of a free nation unfolds
through powerful exhibit galleries, an evocative film and living
history. Outdoors, visitors experience military and domestic life
in a Continental Army camp and 18th century farm site. |
