Charities

Securing Emergency Resources Through Volunteer Efforts
In Manassas is a non profit agency that assists families and individuals facing temporary emergency situations.  SERVE provides shelter to homeless people, emergency food to those in need, transitional housing and support services and emergency payments for rent, utilities, medicine and fuel assistance.  Volunteer positions are available to do light typing, filing and answering the phone, as drivers to assist those moving from the shelter or to pick up donated furniture, in the shelters for a variety of jobs, or as Life Skills educators.  Anyone handy with tools or a paint brush and can make repairs is welcome or someone with a green thumb can do outside yard sprucing up.  Volunteers also work in the Clothes Closet and Food Closet, organizing and distributing donations. Extension Office

Prince William Cooperative Extension Office
Has a large network of volunteers that draw on the resources of the community and Virginia Tech.  Among the programs offered by the service that are staffed by volunteers are master gardeners, 4-H Clubs, Rainbow Handicapped Riding Center, guide dog host families, personal finance counselors and Strong Families, Competent Kids parenting group leaders. Citizen Police Academy

The Prince William County Police Department presents this nine-week academy to provide citizens with insight into the operation of local law enforcement. Each three-hour session focuses on a different aspect of the Police Department. Candidates for the Citizen Police Academy must be at least 21 years of age, live or work in the County, have no felony convictions, and have no misdemeanor arrests within two years. Action in the Community Through Service
In Dumfries is a non profit agency that provides temporary emergency housing, the Turning Points Safe House, long-term transitional housing, and three day-care centers.  Volunteers after thorough training work in the new Court Advocacy Program to help clients through the court system. In addition, ACTS operates a Helpline telephone service, an emergency food and financial assistance program, Tele- teen hotline and a Warm-line for latchkey children.  To volunteer , call John Walker at 221-3186.

 Citizen Fire and Emergency Medical Services Academy

Twice a year, the Department of Fire and Rescue sponsors a five-week academy to provide education about fire and rescue services. This training is designed to have a positive impact on risk reduction in the home, workplace and community.  Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) Training

The Department of Fire and Rescue holds CERT Training biannually. The training consists of eight sessions to be held on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Course topics include disaster preparedness, fire safety, hazardous materials, first aid, disaster psychology and much more.  Community Leadership Institute

The Community Leadership Institute provides citizens with an opportunity to learn how the County government operates. This ten-week program meets one evening per week and includes human services, public safety, economic development, budgeting and strategic planning, and other County departments All County residents are eligible to apply. Interfaith Caregivers

Prince William Interfaith Volunteer Caregivers Program
covers a broad range of supportive assistance.  Their needs include volunteers to assist people who have just returned from the hospital with meal preparation, light housekeeping and companionship. For older residents, volunteers provide transportation to and from doctors, the grocery store, therapy, and treatments. Companions are also needed for people who are HIV positive and AIDS patients.  For information, call 368-3825.

Prince William County Government
Has a number of volunteer opportunities in county agencies.  Among the offices using volunteers are the Office of Citizen and Consumer Assistance and the Prince William County Extension Office. Hospice

Hospice of Northern Virginia in Arlington
Offers comprehensive in-patient and at home care for terminally ill patients, and those who love them.  Its volunteer network covers a wide area from home care, bereavement and grief support to office duties.  Call Hospice Volunteer Services at (703) 534-7070.  Training is conducted on an as needed basis.  There is also a Hospice office in Dale City, for anyone interested in volunteering. Libraries & Literacy

The Prince William Library System
Relies on its volunteers to help the libraries run smoothly.  Volunteers re-shelve books, man the check out counter and do a variety of other jobs. Positions are available at all libraries and volunteers can work at the branch closest to home.  To volunteer call Belinda Tyson at 792-6100.

The Literacy Volunteers of America-Prince William
Conduct workshops for those interested in helping adults to learn or improve their basic reading skills.  After training, volunteers are matched with an appropriate adult student.  Call 670-5702.

Museum

The Manassas Museum
Uses volunteers to staff its store, Echoes, Volunteers answer visitor inquiries and conduct periodic visitor surveys, among other duties. Tour guides are needed for school groups.  They work about 3 1/2 hours a month. Training is provided for all positions.  For information call the museum.  368-1873.

Recreation

Stonewall Park Swim Team - Home of the Explosion
Stonewall Park Swim Team strives to provide a safe and fun environment for swimmers of all experience levels to learn proper swimming techniques, good sportsmanship, and the experience of team competition.  We are a non-profit swim team managed solely by parent volunteers.  We are open to all who are interested and welcome you to come and join the fun! QDD Swim Team
is a Community based, parent owned and parent run swim team.  We train children of all ages from learn to swim to National Champions in competitive swimming.  We also conduct American Red Cross certified Lifeguarding, CPR, First Aid and AED training courses as well as Sports Safety Training for all sports. We are a 501(c) 3 organization listed with IRS and are not for profit.  We have a swimmer population of 277 children and use 12 certified coaches  in 5 local swimming pools to conduct classes and practices.  We maintain an office at 9446 Taney Road in Manassas and have office hours from 8:30 am to 3 pm Monday through Friday.
